Energy resilience workshop

I am delighted to give a talk and workshop on the topic of energy resilience on the 10th March 2025 in Ballingeary Co. Cork.

Energy workshop topics

  • What is sustainable energy? What is energy resilience? Is there a difference?
  • Can you keep the lights on and the house warm even if a storm knocks out the power grid?
  • Does renewable energy have to be electric?
  • What is the best mix of renewable energy for your home?
  • Discover how much energy different household appliances use
  • Explore some real local off-grid systems and discover their strengths and limitations.

This workshop is complimentary courtesy of Comharchumann Forbartha Mhúscraí Teoranta, which is a community development co-operative operating in the interest of the Muscraí Gaeltacht area in Co Cork.

Irish Language Sustainability and Resilience Wisdom

The workshop will be bilingual, in Irish and English. Most of the verbal presentation will be in Irish with most of the visual presentation in English. This way we aim to cater to users of both official languages and foster an environment where Irish can be learned naturally through a meaningful context such as taking responsibility and control of our own energy supply and use.

Information for non-Irish speakers

You do not need any competency in Irish to attend this workshop, but there may be moments where understanding is slightly delayed. Rather than being exclusive, the use of the Irish language in public settings is including everyone in the reclamation of our language, heritage and autonomy. Indeed the Irish language has much to teach on the subject of energy resilience.

Irish energy proverbs

“Múineann Gá Seift” meaning “Necessity teaches Resourcefulness” is the theme of the talk and is an Irish “seanfhocal” or proverb (literally “old-word”).

I would also add these proverbs that speak to the theme of energy resilience:

“Níl aon tinteáin mar do thinteán féin”

“Don’t put all your eggs In one basket!”

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

We will get into the present relevance of these wise sayings during the workshop!
